Coyuchi Camp Shirt (Natural Dye)

Coyuchi Camp Shirt (Natural Dye)

$430.00

For this piece we’ve partnered up with Khadi Oaxaca who specialize in growing, cleaning and spinning their own cotton thread. They’ll also naturally dye all of their fabric with resources from their native land in San Sebastian Rio Hondo, Oaxaca. Khadi is compromised of nearly 400 families who live and work in indigenous villages, and on traditional farms and homesteads.

This fabric is made with Coyuchi, a naturally growing brown cotton from Oaxaca and with Cochinilla or cochineal, which is a scale insect from which the natural dye carmine is derived. This inset grows on nopales cacti over a period of a couple weeks, then they are removed, dried and ground into a fine powder. The thread is soaked in aluminum, which is used as a mordant, then it’s dried and put into a bath with the dyes for several hours or overnight.
