For this piece we’ve partnered up with Khadi Oaxaca who specialize in growing, cleaning and spinning their own cotton thread. They’ll also naturally dye all of their fabric with resources from their native land in San Sebastian Rio Hondo, Oaxaca. Khadi is compromised of nearly 400 families who live and work in indigenous villages, and on traditional farms and homesteads.

This fabric is made with three different colored threads. For the warp they used Pericon [Wild Marigold] and Añil [Indigo]. The weft thread is Coyuchi, a naturally growing brown cotton from Oaxaca that was dyed with Cochineal. Cochinilla or cochineal is a scale insect from which the natural dye carmine is derived. This inset grows on nopales cacti over a period of a couple weeks, then they are removed, dried and ground into a fine powder. Dyeing the thread with this color is the same process as with Pericon. The thread is soaked in aluminum, which is used as a mordant, then it’s dried and put into a bath with the dyes for several hours or overnight.
